Assessment week
For this week we were told that we would have an assessment week. That meant that there would be no formal lessons and we would be tasked on focusing on a single piece of work according to a theme. the theme we were set was Divali and colour and light. Immediately I had the idea of creating an animation which involved the sun revolving around a view and as it does flowers and trees grow on the landscape.
Phase 1
At the beginning of the assessment week I focused on creating a sketch of the landscape and how each frame would play out. I began with the rotation of the sun as well as the ground so I can get an understanding of where each frame would take place. Shown on the right are my sketches.
Phase 2
Phase 2 was the most difficult part. It was the drawing of each frame unique but similar in a way so that the animation wouldn’t feel blocky and out of order. I began with the key frames (midnight, sunrise, midday, sunset) as a way to make me know how each frame would look. then I began with the flowers and the tree as each flower would have to start small and then grow into a bigger flower and the tree must look like the leaves are growing as the sun hits different areas of the tree. The shading was oddly the easiest part as it only required me using the soft brush, making sure colour transfer is on and pen pressure is enabled, pressing alt at each difference of colour and then slowly fading them into each other. I also used soft brush but with the opacity turned down to 185 as to create a darker shade in places where the sun wasn’t hitting to make it feel more like the sun was actually lighting up the area.
Final phase
Finally, I imported all the frames into after effects and ensure that they were the smallest length they could be. then i worked on ensuring that the frames weren’t too quick or too slow as it would allow for each frame to be viewed easily.
WWW: my ability to create shadows that coaligned with the suns position on the landscape I drew. EBI: I made more frames as to make it feel less blocky and also including more detail to make it feel more alive.
