Year 1 – Week 5

Monday

At the beginning of Pete’s lesson, we recapped on the rule of 9 within shading and created another sphere. This time round I felt that I did much better as the shading had much more different tones to it.

For the rest of Pete’s lesson we started creation of a concept sheet which involved; Fauna; Flora and a main boss. I decided to create a skeletal looking fauna as well as a flora that looks like it is made out of tar. I began by creating the basic shapes for my fauna and I then developed them with even more detail and on the final phase I put the detail into the fauna and added colour to make it feel more alive.

The final product depicts the Flora, Fauna and the descriptions of what part they play in my world. The Fauna acts as a sort of mindless entity which walks and only attacks when provoked by the player. The flora on the other hand is always aware and if one detects the player then it will signal all the other plants using the hive mind and can cause harm to the player which strengthens the fact that my world is never safe.

Independent study

For my Independent study time I worked on creating more concepts for my dungeons and Dragon’s theme. I began by working on photoshop creating different angles for my concept art. Shown on the right is my concept art of the mask

Afterwards I begun work on creating the mask into a physical object on Blender. i used the concept art as a guide on how to produce the final design. I began by using the warp tool and cut tool to ensure that the shape had the right proportions and then I began painting.

Shown on the right is my final design. I kept most of the same properties but altered the teeth design which made the front teeth stand out more and look more angled.

Thursday

Our starter question for Dom’s lesson was “What is anatomy for art?” To me anatomy for art is the knowledge and understanding muscle groups, skeletal system and surface structure. each play a crucial part in creating a character as they are the main parts of a human body which are visible to an extent. At the beginning we began to create faces as that was going to be one of the things we would do this lesson. This is my first attempt at creating facial features

Here are my second attempts at creating facial features. The eye was the first thing we worked on, and it was a massive improvement compared to my first attempt. WWW: the basic structure of the eye. EBI: if I could improve the shading using different opacity to give a more realistic effect.

Next, I worked on improving my noses. We first started with making three overlapping circles and then outlined the nose and lastly did the shading. It is much better than my noses at the beginning as it is more realistic. WWW: The shading of the nose. EBI: I could sketch the nose outline better as it is very disproportional

Finally, I worked on developing my mouth. I began yet again by creating three circles and then sketching an outline of the mouth. Then I created the creases on the lips and added highlights and shading to create more realism.

After my break I began creating a turnaround sheet for my character. Dom gave us a reference and I immediately began sketching how my character would look. I began with the basic structure which included the body and the clothes. Secondly, I began work on colouring in the body and clothes so I could have an idea on how they mix as it would be useful to know whether two colours work together or not. Luckily, in this case, they did. Then I worked on the hair. I made sure that it wasn’t too abstract to look impossible but also not too simple as to look normal and ordinary. Fourthly, I worked on the shading and highlights. I made sure that from each perspective the lighting would all come from the same angle as it ensured that it would look professional and of high standard.

Finally, I added in the facial features.  went with an alien look by adding a third eye. This made it feel more unique and gave it more character than if I was to go with a Basic face. Overall, I feel as though my character Was a good choice and that It’s unique style really makes it stand out.
